Panama Canal Construction - "Through The Canal Bottom", 1912

Fighting nature. As a part of the Panama Canal, "El Corte de Culebra" or the "Snake Cut" connects Gatun Lake with the Gulf of Panama. It is an artificially cut valley through the Panamanian mountains and measures over 8 miles/13 kilometers in length and up to 40 feet/12 meters in height. From the near 100 million cubic yards of material about one third was additional to the original planning and brought in by landslides during the construction.
